I’ve always been interested in finding ways to conserve. My great grandmother lived during the Great Depression and conserved everything. She reused ziptop bags and tinfoil. She kept lights turned off and used cloth rags instead of paper towels. Because of her influence and a modest income, my mother was also always very resourceful. She taught me to reuse wrapping paper and bows. My sister and I made crafts from household items. I’ve always turned off the water when brushing my teeth and taken quick showers.
Once I found out that I was going to be a mother, I became even more interested in finding ways to make the world a better place for my children (and some day their children). I wanted to do every thing I could, but I didn’t know how much I could really do. Wouldn’t it be hard to do? Wouldn’t it be hard to incorporate green ideas into my life? Wouldn’t it be difficult to fit being green into my lifestyle? Wouldn’t I have to give up luxuries that I really liked in my life? Well the answers have been “no, no, no and no.” I haven’t given up anything (I’ve actually gained a lot). And it’s been easy and even fun to do.
I started researching ideas, trying new things, and reading everything that I could about “green living” and incorporating some of what I found into our lives. Needless to say I found and documented a lot of things that I could do to make my home (and the planet) healthier for me and for them. You know, it was easier than I thought. Now I am finding so many ideas, that I’m implementing new green things into my life all the time. The more I did, the more opportunity I saw and the more I wanted to do.
For the most part my family has not noticed the difference. In so many ways the difference has been positive and we’ve been happily surprised at how easy it was to change. I think that the process of learning about ways to make our lives “greener” has made my older kids realize that they can make a difference and impact the earth (even at a young age). It is something that anyone and everyone can do – big and/or small.
In 2008, I began putting information together to build a green website. My husband, Richard, was busy building a green show home named Greenhaven. Greenhaven Daily started out educating people about on the green products and living ideas incorporated in the Greenhaven Show Home. We focused on how to incorporate these green ideas into your daily lives. It has now evolved into a site for everyone to benefit from.
I hope that by sharing my research and experience with you, I can help you see that being “green” is within your grasp. There are thousands of ways to be part of the solution. Find what works for you. Take a step in the direction of making the earth a better place and your life healthier. It’s exciting and fun once you get started. You just have to jump in and start somewhere. Why not now? |
